The Cabildo de La Palma, through an agreement adopted by the Board of Spokespersons, supports the international campaign #SDG18 before the United Nations World Organization (UN) for the Protection of the Sky and Access to Starlight. An initiative promoted by the Federation of Business and Professional Women BPW Spain, through BPW Canarias and together with the Starlight Foundation.
The campaign seeks to make La Palma the first island in the world to join the #SDG18 international campaign to promote the Protection of the Sky and Access to Starlight before the UN as a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
The Canary Islands have always been a world reference in astronomy and a standard-bearer in the fight to defend the night sky, having as a reference the first Sky Law in the world. Also, in the Archipelago the aforementioned Declaration of La Palma or Starlight Declaration was born, the first written manifesto in Defense of the Night Sky and the Right to Starlight, promoted by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) and in whose drafting they participated representatives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, World Tourism Organization, International Astronomical Union, MaB Program (Man and Biosphere), Council of Europe, non-governmental organizations, numerous United Nations commissions as well as universities and research centers in more than 23 countries.
A pioneering international campaign, inspired by the La Palma Declaration or Starlight Declaration, which is supported by this Institution.
