Between October 3 and 7, 2021, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and Spain, together with the International Astronomical Union (IAU), and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), headquarters in Santa Cruz de La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), they organized a virtual workshop with the theme “Dark and Silent Skies for Science and Society” with the aim of analyzing the threat of light and radioelectric pollution on astronomy and on the visibility of the pristine night sky. During the workshop, a document was produced that describes what measures governments and private companies can take to mitigate the negative impact of technological implementations in astronomy (for example, urban lighting, broadcasting and the deployment of satellite constellations) without reduce the effectiveness of the services offered to citizens. The final document, intended to become a reference for situation analysis, will be submitted to the Intergovernmental Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) for consideration.
